Authentic Features

The guitar features historically accurate details such as the wider and more bend-friendly frets that arrived in 1959, an authentic non-chambered solid mahogany back and carved maple top, and a one-piece mahogany neck with tone-enhancing long neck tenon. Beyond the superior construction, however, Epiphone knows that players’ tastes vary, so the Tribute Les Paul Standard is available with two different neck profiles to suit individual preferences, a traditional "1960's" SlimTaper™ neck profile or an Asymmetrical neck profile. The "1960's" SlimTaper™ is a comfortable "D" shaped neck that was used and made famous on many 1960's era, Kalamazoo-made guitars from Gibson and Epiphone. The newer Asymmetrical neck has multiple radii and combines a more rounded "D" shape on the bass side of the neck with a flatter "C" shape on the treble side, resulting in an extremely comfortable neck that is more ergonomically contoured to fit the hands of most players.

When it took over briefly from the Les Paul Standard in 1961, the SG was very much a part of Les Paul’s vision, and the SG remained an iconic Gibson electric even after the single-cutaway Les Paul Standard returned later in the decade. Mahogany is one of the most revered tonewoods in the history of guitar making, with a rich, deep sound and a long tradition at Gibson USA, and it remains the cornerstone of the SGJ. The guitar’s body is crafted from solid mahogany in the iconic thin, lightweight offset-double-cutaway style, with distinctive “horns” and beveled edges for improved playing comfort. A neck made from hard-wearing maple is glued into the body and carved to a ’50s rounded profile that measures .818” at the 1st fret and .963” at the 12th. It is topped with a genuine rosewood fingerboard that carries 24 medium-jumbo frets to extend your playing reach, and elegant pearloid dot inlays. There’s no pickguard or fingerboard binding to clutter the straight-on, stripped-down look of the SGJ, while quality touches continue with a PLEK-cut nut made from black Corian™ to subtly echo the black top-hat knobs and black pickup rings and covers. The New Les Paul Traditional wraps several crucial features into a classic Les Paul that always just seemed right, echoing the specs of guitars that rocked the world through the 1980s and ’90s. The New Les Paul Traditional’s tonewood combination retains the great sound of the original Les Paul Standard, with an unchambered back for a thick, meaty tone and superb sustain. Its rounded late-’50s neck shape reflects one of the most popular profiles ever used on a Les Paul. Two PAF-style humbucking pickups with Orange Drop tone capacitors give no end of power and finesse. All this, and the new Les Paul Traditional looks outrageous with its Grade-AA figured maple top beneath a new Honey Burst, Heritage Cherry Sunburst, Caramel Burst, Light Burst, or Chicago Blue finish, all in high-gloss nitrocellulose lacquer.

The New Les Paul Traditional is built on a foundation of the same traditional tonewood combination that helped to make the Les Paul Standard legendary when it first arrived six decades ago. A carved solid Grade-AA figured maple top lends bite and articulation to the sound while looking great in the process, and a solid, mahogany back without weight relief contributes superb warmth and depth. A quarter-sawn, Grade-A mahogany neck is glued in and carved in a comfortably rounded late-’50s profile that measures .900” at the 1st fret and 1.00” at the 12th, and topped with a bound Grade-A rosewood fingerboard with 22 medium-jumbo frets and traditional trapezoid inlays. Traditional touches include cream body and fingerboard binding, pickguard, and pickup rings, along with gold Speed Knobs with dial pointers. Classic Gibson construction ensures optimum playability, too, along with traditional specs like a 24 ¾” scale length, a 1 11/16” width across the PLEK-cut Corian™ nut, and a 12-inch fingerboard radius for smooth, easy bending.

Pure vintage-voiced tone with a contemporary edge is assured by a pair of Gibson’s ’57 Classic™ pickups with traditional chromed covers. Both are made in the image of the hallowed PAF humbucker of the late 1950s with Alnico II magnets, a traditional wind in the neck position for plenty of warmth and clarity, and slightly over-wound coils in the ’57 Classic Plus™ in the bridge position for juicy crunch and wailing lead tones. Both pickups are wax potted, too, to avoid microphonic squeal at high volume levels, and routed through Orange Drop tone capacitors to their individual tone controls for a smooth, rich high-end roll off. The BurstBucker 1 in the neck position and BurstBucker 2 in the bridge are made with genuine Alnico II magnets and wound with 42 AWG wire, with slightly mismatched coils, just like the legendary PAF humbuckers of the late '50s, for a characteristic edge and complexity that is unmatched by modern humbucking pickups.

Between them, these pickups yield the throaty warmth and crunchy sting that has made late-'50s Les Pauls legendary. Another subtle feature is the incorporation of Marshall's proprietary input jack that is mounted to a cream Les Paul reissue jackplate. The original Phantom was released in 1962 and the unusual pentagonal body quickly appealed to guitarists looking for something a little different. Despite being discontinued in 1967 it remained popular and Phantoms have been played by artists including Captain Sensible, Dave Davies of The Kinks and Ian Curtis of Joy Division, whose white Phantom VI Special appears in the video for "Love Will Tear Us Apart."

This new reissue has been upgraded with a tremolo arm for greater flexibility of performing style, and three single-coil pickups for an ample variety of sounds. The basswood body is married to a hard maple neck and a 22-fret rosewood fingerboard, and the guitar is supplied with a soft case to protect it on the road.
